L. reuteri is a lost species that was once a natural part of the human gut – today, it is completely absent from most people. Due to antibiotics, sterile diets, and modern lifestyles, it has disappeared from our microbiome. Since it doesn't return on its own, it must be deliberately reintroduced. Our starter kit is the most effective way to cultivate L. reuteri in high numbers – by making your own probiotic yogurt with billions of active bacteria.

Limosilactobacillus reuteri is a lost microbe with extraordinary potential. Regularly fermented as yogurt, it can trigger processes in the body that many users describe as life-changing. Targeted intake of this strain not only works in the gut, but also exerts effects along the entire gut-brain axis.

With the starter set you can prepare your own L. reuteri yogurt – fresh, high-dose and without additives.

A yogurt starter requires at least 5 to 20 billion colony-forming units (CFU), or 1-4 capsules. Therefore, a starter culture consists of 4 capsules of 5 billion colony-forming units (CFU) each, for a total of 20 billion CFU per starter, and is sufficient for approximately 20 fermentation cycles.

What happens when you reattach?

Ready-made yogurt can be used as a starter multiple times. However, the culture can change over several generations. Spontaneous mutations, contamination, or the selection of faster-growing subspecies can lead to a decline in effectiveness. Dr. William Davis, who developed the method, recommends starting fresh with new capsules after at least 20 batches. This preserves the physiological activity of the bacteria.

Why 20 generations?

Food microbiological studies show that lactic acid bacteria can undergo genetic changes after approximately 10 to 30 passages. For L. reuteri , those who want to fully utilize the benefits of this species should start fresh regularly.

Scientific Interest in L. reuteri

Numerous studies have explored the potential physiological effects of Limosilactobacillus reuteri. Key areas of research include:

Microbiome stability and colonization
Controlled studies have shown that L. reuteri can colonize the gut under suitable conditions and complement the existing microbiome (Jones & Versalovic, 2009).

Digestion and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)
Certain strains of L. reuteri promote the production of SCFAs such as acetate and butyrate, which play an important role in maintaining the gut barrier and supplying energy to intestinal cells (El Hage et al., 2017).

Immune modulation and anti-inflammatory effects
Studies in mice and humans suggest that specific L. reuteri strains can modulate immune responses – for example, by supporting regulatory T cells or inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines (Mu et al., 2018).

Oxytocin and the gut-brain axis
In mouse studies, L. reuteri has been observed to stimulate the production of the bonding hormone oxytocin – via direct communication pathways between the gut and the brain, known as the gut-brain axis. These effects were associated with prosocial behavior and increased stress resilience (Buffington et al., 2016).

Sleep quality
Some animal studies and observational data in humans suggest that L. reuteri may be linked to longer deep sleep phases, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear (Kawase et al., 2013).

Skin appearance
In animal studies, supplementation with L. reuteri led to improved skin elasticity and increased dermal thickness. Anti-inflammatory and hormonal mechanisms are suspected to play a role (Levkovich et al., 2013).

Mood and emotional behavior
Preclinical studies have described antidepressant-like effects of L. reuteri – possibly mediated through the microbiome–CNS–neurotransmitter axis (Liu et al., 2021).

Sex hormones and libido
In mouse models, supplementation with L. reuteri was associated with higher testosterone levels and improved sperm quality. These are early findings and cannot yet be directly translated to humans (Poutahidis et al., 2014).

Body composition and muscle metabolism
Some studies indicate that L. reuteri may be associated with reduced visceral fat and signs of improved muscle mass (Liu et al., 2021; Chen et al., 2021).

General well-being
In non-interventional studies, many users report a subjective improvement in well-being. These effects are individual and have not yet been systematically confirmed.

Our starter kit is suitable for anyone who wants to use yogurt specifically to support their health. For anyone who wants to reclaim L. reuteri as a lost species – with clear effects and uncompromising quality.
